Memory & Storage

Anyone who’s ever used a digital camera will be well aware of the possible issues with camera memory storage. The real need is for a lot of space and very high standards of data transfer, particularly if you’re using a video or DSLR camera.

Memory cards-Types and prices

The different types of memory storage are priced on size and type of storage:

  • Typically, all memory storage is SD (Secure Digital) format, for standard, Micro SD and Flash memory cards
  • Memory size ranges from 4GB to 64GB (4GB equals 1 hour of video)
  • Most, but not all, memory cards are designed for HD
  • Prices vary from about $10.95 for 4GB memory cards up to the top of the range Panasonic 64GB SDXC which retails for about $600 but is a lot cheaper online.
  • Micro SD and Flash memory cards are significantly cheaper, and can take memory up to 32GB

Memory sticks

Some people prefer memory sticks to the cards as being ultra-portable and usable anywhere. The current range of memory sticks have approximately the same size range as the Micro and Flash memory cards, and are slightly cheaper.

USB Flash drives

The new USB flash drives are much improved on the old types. They can now take up to 64GB, and these top of the range drives also come with a backup button, encryption and password protection. In terms of price, they’re significantly cheaper than their equivalents in other memory storage devices.

Memory card readers

Designed mainly for USB drives, the memory card readers include very useful all-purpose reader/writers like the Olympus MAUSB- 500xD reader/writer which can also handle audio and data, with a 2GB capacity, and the SanDisk range of all-purpose readers, which have very high upload rates for HD and video.
