UV filters are designed to block UV while letting in visible light. Ultra violet light is high frequency light, and it’s a particular issue for digital cameras. You may not be able to see it, but your camera can, and it can directly affect your imaging systems.
This very high intensity light is one of the reasons for blur “purple rings” and glare, aside from such obvious factors as sunlight and some types of artificial lighting. UV filters are also good protection for your camera lens. They keep out dirt, finger prints and block scratching and airborne particles.
Digital Camera UV filter sizes
These filters, naturally, are designed to work with standard lens sizes. You’ll notice that some filters are dark, where others are clear. The difference is largely cosmetic, in terms of the UV filtering process, because UV light is invisible. The difference in colour really just means a different sort of coating is used on the filter.
Buying UV filters
If you’re asking yourself whether you actually need a UV filter, professional photographers can tell you that you do. The UV filters are insurance against those little tricks of the light which can wreck good pictures. The additional protection for your camera lens is an added bonus. Sand blowing on a beach can affect lens coatings, so it’s a good idea to have that extra level of defence.
UV filters generally aren’t expensive. A few retail around $200-$300, but you can get good discounts for these lenses online, so you can focus on getting the right size UV filter at the right price.
A word of advice- Compare the Hoya, Bower and Kenko brands. These brands are fierce competitors, and you’ll benefit from the competition in lower prices.
