If you’ve ever done underwater photography, you’ll be well aware of the risks to your gear. A current can play tricks on you or a surface swell can toss you around, and wreck your camera quite easily. Even just swimming with a camera, unexpected events can cause impacts that can do a lot of damage.
Checking out underwater housings
Major camera manufacturers have created a lot of very good, very tough underwater housings for their cameras. The great news for underwater photographers is that they’ve also included some good, practical technology.
Canon, for example, has very wisely made weights for their WP-DC underwater housings. This eliminates the notorious “float factor” in lightweight digital cameras. The WP-DC range also includes very well moulded housings for their huge range of high performance cameras. They’re more than “skins”, and they’re also designed to operate at 40 metre depths, a very good range for experienced divers.
Sony has followed a similar, but not identical design path. The Sony underwater housings include dive straps, and housings for families of the Sony cameras like the Cybershot W range. Olympus has developed their range and included special underwater lenses, flashes and camera rings.
Buying underwater camera housings
If you’re a pro photographer, you’ll appreciate both the value and the usefulness of the new generation of underwater housings. It’s well worth a good long browse through the underwater housings, because you’ll see quite a range of good, practical ideas for underwater photography as well as finding your own camera housing for your camera.
You’ll also be surprised to find that even the top of the range underwater camera housings aren’t overly expensive, particularly compared to the cost of a new high end DSLR or other major league camera. Some of the discounts available are nearly 40% of retail, and that’s good money saved upfront.
