DSLR battery grips look like mysterious things when you first see them. They’re actually holders for batteries, designed to take a range of different types of batteries for different types of cameras. Also sometimes known as “battery magazines”, these grips clip or slot in to your DSLR.

The battery grips are very useful things to have, particularly if you’re doing a lot of shooting. They make battery management very easy, literally a quick replacement job. Professional photographers, in fact, use battery grips for their DSLRs for that very reason. They’re simple, quick, and don’t intrude on the work.

This ease of use is very important if you have a late model DSLR, particularly an upscale camera. These very high performance cameras need to be charged and fully functional to give their best, so your battery grips are really working as a power management system to ensure picture quality.

Finding your battery grips

The quickest and simplest way to find the right battery grips is to search by camera model. For instance, if you search for a popular brand like Canon EOS 5D, you’ll find a battery magazine called Canon BG-ME2, which is designed for several models in the Canon EOS range as well as the EOS 5D.

Important-Don’t just search by brand and description. This can get messy and confusing, as well as time wasting. If you searched “Canon EOS”, you’d have to dig around in the various pages looking for the right model, and there are a lot of Canon EOS models on the market.

Buying your battery grips

Battery grips usually aren’t super-expensive, but some can retail at $200- $500. It’s well worth looking at the discounts, because you will get a very good deal. Realistically, you can hope to get a discount of around 20% on the top price models and even up to 30% on the mid-range prices.
