The AC adaptor is the photographer’s best friend in so many ways. The fact is that digital cameras, brilliant as they are, need to be looked after in terms of their power supplies. If you’ve ever had the experience of a camera slowly fading out on you when you’re out shooting, you’ll know the story only too well.
The good news for photographers is that the camera manufacturers have pretty much streamlined and simplified the choices for their customers, and you’ll find that their AC adaptors are suitable for multiple camera models. Canon, for example, has adaptors which work with both EOS DSLRs and Powershot cameras, using a very simple plug and play adaptor. In some cases the adaptor is a simple cable, connecting to a camcorder recharger and a wall outlet.
Finding the right AC adaptor
The AC adaptors come in a vast range of different styles and types, depending on camera models, cabling requirements and plug-in types. Fortunately there’s a way to find the AC adaptor you need quite easily.
To find the right AC adaptor, search for your camera specifically using the model number, not the brand or model names. There’s a risk of getting an adaptor which is designed for a totally different power management system in the same brand range, so be a bit patient and make sure you’re getting the right adaptor for your camera.

- If you search for a Canon AC adaptor, you’ll find at least 20 different types of adaptor, and most of them will be the wrong ones.
- If you search for a Canon A200 adaptor, you’ll instantly find the Canon ACK 800 adaptor, which is the correct model for your camera.
Buying an AC adaptor
You do have a choice about how much you pay for your AC adaptor. You can get good discounts on any adaptor type, including the big name brands, up to about 20%. Shop around, see what’s available, and you will save money.
